Hostel Loreta, Denia ... Lovely place, very central, very friendly, very clean, will definately use again.

Description - Hotel

Hostal Loreto is a 43 bedroomed hotel in the centre of the old city, close to many good restaurants and shops. It is 800 metres from the beach.

The hotel was formerly a nunnery and was built by the Marquis del Campo about 450 years ago. It is rumoured that there is a secret tunnel to the castle on the hill top behind the hotel.

The hotel houses a popular restaurant which fronts onto a street terrace in a pedestrian area. There is also a pleasantly cool XIV century patio where guests may dine or breakfast.

The bar and restaurant are open all day from 8:00 serving drinks and snacks including a wide range of coffees and ice-creams.

Neighborhood

There are activities to suit everyone in and around Denia, including golf, sailing, scuba diving, kite boarding and windsurfing, jet skiing, mountain biking, horse riding and climbing. Many people come however just to enjoy the 20 kilometres of beautiful beaches!

Denia is steeped in history going back to Grecian times and beyond. The castle was built by the Moors during their 700 year occupation of the area and is built on the site of Roman ruins. The annual celebration of "Moors & Christians" re-enacts the driving out of the Moors by the Christians in 1492 and takes place in the first two weeks of August every year.

There are many other fiestas and celebrations in Denia all of which involve copious quantities of music, processions and fire-works. They are fascinating both to see and to take part in. In March the "Fallas" (burning of effigies to symbolise the start of Spring), in April the Easter parades, in July "Bous del mar" (Bulls in the sea), in August "Moors and Christians", to name but a few. There are also many outdoor concerts and festivals such as the annual International Dance Festival which lasts for a week and takes place under the moonlight in the amphitheatre by the castle walls.

Denia is also well placed for short visits to Ibiza and the Balearic Islands. The Teramitaca and Tera Natura theme parks are only a short drive away as are many other attractions such as the Aqualandia waterpark, and the Mundomar sealife park. There is also a nature reserve just outside Denia as well as a Safari park. Short boat trips can be made from Denia to many other resorts along the coast.

How to get there

BY CAR:
As you enter Denia you drive straight-on over a series of five roundabouts, there is a Macdonald's on the left just before the fourth and a petrol station on the left just before the fifth. Exit the fifth roundabout at the second exit into the Av. de Valencia and drive straight on until you reach the no-entry signs (at the end of the Calle Loreto!). Turn right into the Plaza Valgamedios and then take the second on the left into Calle Pare Pere. Take the second on the left into Calle San Jose. Park here and proceed in the same direction on foot to the top of the street. This is the junction with Calle Loreto, the hotel is on your right.

BY BUS
Walk towards the supermarket at the bus station and turn right into the Calle de la Via. Take the first turning on the left into Calle San Jose and walk to the T junction with Calle Loreto. From here you can see the hotel on your right.

BY TRAIN
Cross the Plaza Oculista Buigues in front of the station and walk towards the main shopping street the Marques de Campo. Turn left into the Marques de Campo and walk to the square Glorieta del Pais Valencia. Turn right into Calle del Cop and proceed to the Plaza de la Constitucion. Calle Loreto is the second street on the left off the Plaza.

BY FERRY
If you are on foot, depending on which pier the ferry has docked at, proceed either via Marques de Campo (see train instructions) or via Calle de la Mar. If you are driving follow the car instructions above.

Denia is a one hour drive from the airports of Alicante and Valencia and one and a half hours from the airport at Murcia. The city has a bustling port housing the main ferry connections to Ibiza and the Balearic Islands. The Hotel is a pleasant 5 to 10 minute walk from the port. It is also 5 minutes from the central bus station and 5 to 10 minutes from the train station. Although Denia is not on the main railway network there is a small-gauge tram service to Alicante (which has a main line station). There is also a main line station in Gandia and a good bus service from Gandia to Denia.

Nearest airport: Both Alicante (south) and Valencia (north) are 100 Kms by motorway
